Assessment Planning
WHAT: Assessment planning is the next step after a module plan has been created. Planning assessments BEFORE beginning to teach a topic is crucial for the success of PBLA. Assessment planning involves thinking about the end result of an assessment (what do you want the students to be able to DO with the language), and working backwards to plan what needs to be taught in order to achieve the desired result.
WHY: Assessment planning helps make lesson planning easier by laying out all the criteria from the beginning. Teachers can then teach what is needed for the assessment task, which gives direction to the lessons and helps students see the purpose of what they are learning each day, rather than waiting until the end of a unit or theme to find out what they will be expected to do.
HOW: Unfortunately The biggest part of assessment planning is just thinking about what you want the students to be able to do, how you will assess it, what is appropriate for their level, where you might find resources, and making sure it is relevant to what the students need. After the thinking stage, you can begin planning lessons and gathering materials for your daily instruction.

Assessment Planning Strategies:
- Do an online search for your task
- Check tutela.ca
- Check common LINC activities resources
- Check other ESL teaching resources
- Discuss and collaborate with colleagues
- Share with colleagues!
- Break down a real-world task into steps you would do from beginning to end, then match those steps to the CLBs
